What is Pilates?
Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that focuses on strengthening muscles, improving flexibility, balance, coordination and enhancing body awareness through controlled movements and mindful breathing. It was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates as a method of rehabilitation and physical conditioning.
Key Principles of Pilates
Core Strength: Pilates emphasizes building a strong core, which includes the muscles of the abdomen, lower back, hips, and pelvic floor. This foundation supports the entire body and promotes better movement patterns.
Control and Precision: Every movement in Pilates is performed with great attention to control and precision, reducing the risk of injury and maximizing muscle engagement.
Breath: Pilates integrates breathing techniques to help improve oxygen flow and increase focus. Proper breathing also supports core stability and enhances movement efficiency.
Alignment and Posture: Pilates promotes proper body alignment, helping to improve posture and reduce strain on the spine and joints.
Flexibility and Mobility: The exercises are designed to lengthen muscles and increase joint mobility, leading to greater flexibility and ease of movement.

What is Reformer Pilates?
Reformer Pilates is a type of Pilates that uses a specialized piece of equipment called a reformer to enhance the exercises and provide resistance. The reformer consists of a carriage that rolls back and forth on wheels, attached to adjustable springs that offer varying levels of resistance. It also has straps, pulleys, and a foot bar to facilitate a wide range of movements. Reformer Pilates combines the principles of traditional Pilates such as core strength, control, alignment, and breath with the added benefit of resistance from the springs. This allows for a greater range of exercises targeting all muscle groups while offering more support for proper alignment and form.
Reformer Pilates is suitable for a wide range of fitness levels and abilities. It can be modified for beginners, those recovering from injuries, or tailored to challenge advanced practitioners. The machine’s adjustability makes it accessible for people with different body types and fitness goals.
Overall, reformer Pilates offers a dynamic, full-body workout that strengthens, stretches, and aligns the body in a way that is both challenging and supportive. If you have never done reformer we would recommend a private session which will involve a full assessment of your movement patterns, injury history and education around breathing and core activation. It’s a great way to become familiar with the machine and you will be shown the basic Pilates exercises.
