Week 3 Diaphragmatic Breathing

Diaphragmatic breathing, or deep belly breathing, plays a crucial role in pelvic floor activation and relaxation. The diaphragm and pelvic floor are closely connected anatomically and functionally, and working them together improves both breathing and pelvic floor health.

The pelvic floor and diaphragm are part of the core system, along with the abdominal and back muscles. They move in sync: when you inhale, the diaphragm lowers, and the pelvic floor relaxes and lowers; when you exhale, the diaphragm rises, and the pelvic floor contracts and lifts.

Diaphragmatic breathing promotes natural movement in the pelvic floor muscles, ensuring they work as part of a coordinated system.

Diaphragmatic breathing lowers stress levels and reduces tension in the body. Since stress and tension can cause or worsen pelvic floor dysfunction (leading to issues like incontinence, prolapse, or pelvic pain), deep breathing has an indirect but significant impact on pelvic floor health.
